PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team tipped-off the 2022-23 season in epic fashion Tuesday night, soaring past Vaughn College by the score of 101-43 in front of a raucous crowd.
The 101 points were the most the Panthers had scored in a contest since February 1, 2020, when they topped SUNY Old Westbury, 106-91. Likewise, the 43 points allowed were also the fewest the team has given up in a single game since the 2018-19 season, when they allowed the same total two separate times.
From the opening tip to the final horn Tuesday, Purchase was the dominant force on the court.
The hosts started the game with a 20-0 run, and didn't allow the Warriors to score a bucket until almost four minutes into the contest.
Throughout the opening half, the Panthers mauled the guests on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, Purchase forced the Warriors into 24 first-half turnovers and just 4-for-28 shooting to lead 59-10 at halftime.
Following the midway break, the Panthers came out just as aggressive and hounded the guests once more.
The punctuation point came with just under 12 minutes remaining, as
Josiah Nelson (FR/Deer Park, NY) slammed home a dunk to push the lead to its biggest margin of the night — 66 points at 83-17.
From that point on, Vaughn never got closer than down 56 points over the remainder of the contest.
On the night, the Panthers' offense shot 42.7 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three-point range.
Individually, six players finished with double-digit point totals for Purchase, as
Terrence Mason (JR/Greenburgh, NY) paced everyone with 16 points.
Mark Morgan (SR/Bronx, NY) added 14 points, while
Isaac Johnson (JR/Yonkers, NY) totaled 13 points.
Elijah Holmes (SO/Brooklyn, NY),
Trey Skeete (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and Nelson all chipped in 12 points apiece in the win.
On defense, Purchase induced 41 turnovers and held the guests to just 27.4 percent shooting all game.
Up next for the Panthers is a quick return to action, as they are on the road at John Jay College tomorrow (November 9th) at 8 p.m. You can follow along right here.
