NEW YORK, N.Y. - For the second time in two days, the Purchase College men's basketball team has tasted victory.
This win came after the squad bested John Jay College in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night, 69-61.
With the result, the Panthers are now 2-0 to begin the season, a feat they had not matched since the 2016-17 campaign. For the Bloodhounds, they dropped to 0-2.
To begin, it was the hosts that jumped in front and set the pace early. Over the opening ten minutes, John Jay led for much of it, including a team-high lead of 22-16 with 11:04 remaining.
However, it was at that point that Purchase started to take over.
The guests responded to their biggest deficit of the night with a 9-0 run to flip the score in their favor, 25-22 at the 8:36 mark.
Over the remaining 28 minutes of action, the Panthers held the lead and proceeded to build on it slowly but surely.
At halftime, they were ahead 38-33.
In the second half, John Jay never get closer than four points, before Purchase exploded late to push the lead to its biggest of the game, 69-54, in the final minute.
The Panthers' offense came back down to Earth following their otherworldly showing against Vaughn last night, shooting just 38.3 percent from the field, 20 percent from three-point range and committing 23 turnovers.
However, their defense was another story as it remained a force in the win.
Overall, the Bloodhounds shot a lackluster 29.3 percent, 27.3 percent from three and turned the ball over 16 times.
The real difference in the loss though was free throw shooting, as John Jay missed half of their chances going 21-for-42 from the line.
Individually,
Mark Morgan (SR/Bronx, NY) continued his fast start to the season, finishing with a career-high 19 points to lead all players on the night.
Isaac Johnson (JR/Bronx, NY) was the only other Panther in double figures with 15 points, while
Matthew Phillips (SO/Bronx, NY) nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Up next for the Panthers is some rest before getting back on the road for more non-conference action, this time at Connecticut College.
That matchup is set for November 15th at 7 p.m. and you can follow it here.
