PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College men's basketball concluded its 2021-22 home slate Tuesday evening with a Senior Night game against the Privateers of SUNY Maritime.
Senior guards
Malcolm Hansford-Whyte (Queens, NY),
Eric Block (Warwick, NY) and
Jordan Knochen (Maybrook, NY) were honored prior to the start of the Skyline Conference matchup, which later turned in favor of the visitors, 79-70.
Purchase (5-17, 5-10 SKY) opened the game's scoring on a Knochen jumper from
Elijah Holmes (SO/Brooklyn, NY). Maritime (4-18, 1-14 SKY) got on the board in the possession to follow with a Nick Ovanessian swish, but the Panthers fired back with a 5-0 run to open up a five-point lead at 16:39.
Both teams traded baskets in the minutes to follow. The Privateers held a slight offensive edge and eventually tilted the advantage in their favor, 14-12, on a 3-point bucket from Ryan Donovan.
Maritime continued to ignite and closed the first half out in front, 39-34.
Purchase clawed back to tie the game at 45-45 in the opening minutes of the second half, but would not see its first lead of the stanza until the 16th minute.
Matthew Phillips (FR/Bronx, NY) went on a notable run that included six-consecutive points in the paint and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. His performance took a 71-67 deficit and turned it into a 75-71 lead for the Purchase.
The Panthers held a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but would allow the visitors to tie it at 79 apiece, sending the contest into overtime. Maritime shot 80% (4-of-5) from the field in OT, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, to secure the win, 97-90.
Phillips and Block paced the Panther offense with 23 points apiece, while Hansford-Whyte and Knochen chipped in with a combined 25 points. Phillips and Hansford-Whyte also went on to net double-double performances after notching 13 and 10 boards, respectively.
Four Maritime scorers also reached double digits, playing major roles in the overtime win. Donovan led all scorers with 31 points, including 12 in extra minutes. Jaylin Gray tallied 29 points and a pair of steals, while Mike Regan finished with 20 points and tied the team-high in rebounds (8). Ovanessian chipped in with 11 points.
