Purchase Women's Lax Falls in Season Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team kicked off its 2022 campaign Thursday afternoon, falling to Falcons of Albertus Magnus University, 11-4.

To start, the two sides traded goals over the first six minutes of action to a 2-2 scoreline.

Brienne Westfall (JR/Grand Island, NY) was the first to find the back of the net, scoring on an individual effort two and half minutes in.

Three minutes later, Shauna Meehan (JR/Suffern, NY) scored her first-career goal for the Panthers off a feed from Westfall.

The score remained tied for much of the opening quarter, before the visitors struck with just over a minute left to carry a 3-2 margin into the second period.

From there, Albertus Magnus started to pile on the tallies, scoring three in the second, two in the third and one more in opening minute of the fourth to lead, 9-2.

With 13 minutes remaining, Purchase finally broke the Falcons' scoring streak, as Lauren Pudelka (JR/Danbury, CT) found Westfall for her second of the day.

Two quick strikes from the guests pushed the lead to 11-3, before Meehan capped off the contest with an unassisted effort and her second of the game.

While Westfall and Meehan controlled the offense for the Panthers, it was Madison Buttice (JRBethpage, NY) and Sigrid Cassell (SR/Huntington, NY) that fueled the midfield. Combined, the duo had eight ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In goal, Casandra Schmoger (JR/Islip, NY) did all she could to keep Albertus Magnus in check, finishing with 17 saves in the loss.

Up next for the Panthers is a non-conference home matchup with Nichols College on March 14th. That game is set to begin at 1 p.m. and you can follow it here.
