PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team kicked off its 2022 home slate Friday afternoon, falling to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University by the score of 10-3.
The action started slowly on the day, as the two teams combined for just two hits over the first two innings. However, in the third inning, the guests' bats started to come alive, dropping four singles in the frame to score two runs.
In the top of the sixth, the Warriors (4-0) added a third run, before doubling that number one inning later with a sacrifice fly and a two-RBI single from Noah Plantamuro (SR/Bristol, CT).
Despite entering the bottom of the seventh down, 6-0, Purchase continued to battle and was rewarded with three runs in the stanza. The first came when
Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) knocked in
Christian Homa (SO/Fairfield, CT) on a single to left field.
Then during the next at-bat,
Louis Carvell (JR/New York, NY) singled to right field, but ended up scoring on the play, as the right fielder badly misplayed the ball. With the speed of Scarry and Carvell, the duo easily scored during the sequence and cut the deficit it half, 6-3.
The rally was short lived though, as the Warriors responded during their next at-bat with four runs, extending the margin the eventual final score of 10-3.Â
Homa led the Panthers' offense in the loss, as he recorded three of the team's six hits. Scarry, Carvell and
James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) combined for the other three.Â
On the mound, Purchase (0-7) used six pitchers on the day, as they began to prepare for the rest of the season.
Starting pitcher
Ryan Castrataro (JR/Mahopac, NY) was issued the loss after going three innings, allowing two runs (both earned) and striking out two.
Up next for the Panthers is another non-conference single game matchup, this time against Baruch College. That contest is scheduled for March 15th at 4 p.m. and you can follow along here.Â
