HARRISON, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team opened Skyline Conference play in a big way Sunday afternoon, besting Yeshiva University in a pair of road games.
The Panthers secured the wins by the scores of 5-0 and 19-3, and now sit at 4-7 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Maccabees dropped to 2-9 and 0-6, respectively.
Game 1 - Purchase 5, Yeshiva 0 (7 inn.)
The opening game of the day started quickly for the Panthers, as the guests tallied three runs in the first frame.
Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) drove in the first run, with an RBI-single to make it 1-0.
During the next at-bat,
Louis Carvell (JR/New York, NY) smacked a two-RBI single to center, pushing the margin to 3-0. That score remained until the fifth inning, when Purchase added two more runs via a Carvell RBI-groundout and a Yeshiva balk.
While the extra runs were nice for the offense, the Panthers' starting pitcher,
Alex Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY), only needed a single run of support, as the he tossed a complete-game seven-inning shutout in the win.
The senior finished with six strikeouts and allowed just four hits in the effort.
Game 2 - Purchase 19, Yeshiva 3 (7 inn.)
After a relatively-close matchup in game one, the Panthers' offense responded with its best performance of the season to blowout the Maccabees in game two.
Despite the season-high total in runs and hits, Purchase's early output was paced by the hosts as the two teams were tied at 2-2 after two innings.
However, once the visitors reached the third inning, everything changed as Purchase proceeded to drop three runs in the third, five in the fourth, five more in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more run in the seventh to tally 19 for the game.
Carvell led the way with three hits, including a triple, three RBIs and a run scored.
James Shea (SR/Brooklyn, NY) also recorded three hits and scored four runs, while Scarry tallied five RBIs on just one hit in the win.
On the mound,
Ryan Castrataro (JR/Mahopac, NY) kept the Maccabees at bay, striking out six and allowing just three runs over six innings of work.
Up next for the Panthers is a return home for a non-conference matchup with the College of St. Elizabeth. That single game is set for tomorrow (3/21) at 3 p.m. and you can follow it here.
