PC Baseball Drops Pair to Mount St. Mary

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team closed out the weekend with a pair of Skyline Conference losses Sunday afternoon, falling to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College in a home doubleheader.

Scores for the contests were 3-2 and 13-0. With the losses, the Panthers dropped to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in league play. Meanwhile, the Knights jumped to 8-6 and 4-0, respectively.

Game 1 - MSMC 3, Purchase 2 (7 inn.)

To begin the day, both teams started slowly. It wasn't until the bottom of the third that the first scoring opportunity of the game presented itself, as Purchase loaded the bases with a single, a walk, and a hit batter.

However, the guests kept the game tied at 0-0 following an inning-ending flyout. From there, the battle remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Knights finally broke the stalemate.

Despite starting the frame with two-straight outs, Mount St. Mary managed to plate all three of its runs in the stanza. Igniting the rally was back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases, before the Knights scored via some base-running luck.

After a pitch, Purchase's catcher attempted to throw out the runner at first and during that time, Mount's runner on third bolted home and beat the Panthers' ensuing throw back to the plate for the opening score.

During the next at-bat, a Purchase throwing error kept the frame alive and allowed the lead to grow to 2-0. The Knights then hit an RBI-single to push the margin to 3-0, leaving the Panthers with three innings to get the runs back.

The hosts started their comeback attempt strong, notching a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Jason Sebastiano (SO/Brooklyn, NY) and Cameron Cruz (FR/Bronx, NY).

Then in the sixth, Sebastiano hit an RBI-single to cut the deficit to just one run, 3-2. On the mound, the Panthers' pitching held the guests at bay, giving the offense a chance in the seventh to tie things up.

After two quick outs started the frame, James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) reached second base via a Knights' throwing error and Louis Carvell (JR/ New York, NY) walked to put the winning runs on base for Purchase.

However, Mount St. Mary was able to induce a groundout during the next at-bat to seal the road win.

Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) received the loss for the Panthers, despite a great effort on the mound. The sophomore threw 110 pitches to earn the seven-inning complete game, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven.

Game 2 - MSMC 13, Purchase 0 (7 inn.)

While the opening game of the doubleheader proved to be a nail-bitter, game two was anything but that as the Knights' offense came alive.

The guests opened the contest with two runs in the first, before tallying two more in the third, three in the fourth and six in the fifth. As for Purchase's offense, the opposite seemed to take place for its bats, as the hosts recorded just two hits in the loss.

Justin Lorenzo (SO/Freeport, NY) made the start for the Panthers, and was tagged with the defeat after going two innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

Up next for the baseball team is a week of rest before it returns to action at home against SUNY Old Westbury. That Skyline doubleheader is set for April 2nd with first pitch at 11 a.m.
