Purchase Baseball Swept by Fredonia

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Purchase College baseball team closed out its three-day run at The Ripken Experience Saturday morning, dropping a pair of contests to SUNY Fredonia by the scores of 6-1 and 10-5.

With the results, the Panthers are now to 0-6 overall, while the Devils of Fredonia improved to 3-0.

Game 1 - Fredonia 6, Purchase 1 (7 inn.)

Game one saw limited offense early, as the first three innings played out in a scoreless fashion. That changed in the fourth, when the Devils notched three runs via back-to-back triples and a Purchase error.

The scoreline remained 3-0 into the seventh, until Fredonia doubled that margin off a wild pitch and two RBI-doubles.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Panthers scored their only run of the contest when Joseph Ferreri (SO/Commack, NY) knocked in Louis Carvell (JR/New York, NY) on a fielder's choice. One batter later, Fredonia recorded a groundout to seal the game one win.

Carvell collected both of the Panthers' hits in the loss, while James Shea (SR/Brooklyn, NY) walked once and stole a base.

On the mound, Myles Scarry (SO/Levittown, NY) struck out five and allowed five runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings of work.

Game 2 - Fredonia 10, Purchase 5 (7 inn.)

After a slow start in game one, the Purchase bats came out on fire in game two, dropping three runs in the opening frame.

Following a Shea single to start the contest, Cameron Cruz (FR/Bronx, NY) doubled down the left field line to score the senior and put the Panthers ahead. Three batters later, Mason Compton (FR/Carmel, NY) hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0.

The just a couple batters later, Jason Sebastiano (SO/Brooklyn, NY) drew a bases-loaded walk to push the margin to 3-0.

Despite the quick start, the Devils weren't fazed and responded in the bottom of the first by dropping three runs of their own to tie it up again.

One inning later, Fredonia's Tyler Phillips (SR/Buffalo, NY) smacked a solo home run to give the Devils the lead. Then in the fifth, he crushed a three-RBI double, pushing Fredonia's margin to 7-3.

Sebastiano got a run back in the fifth with a fielder's choice that scored Compton, before the Devils scored three more in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-4.

Purchase closed out the contest with an RBI-single from Carvell in the sixth.

In total, the Panthers recorded 11 hits, which are a season-high. Leading the charge was Cruz, who went 4-for-4 to finish with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs.

Compton and Ferreri also added two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Justin Doskoez (SO/Eastport, NY) received the loss after allowing seven runs (all earned) over four innings.

Up next for the Purchase baseball team is a return to the Northeast, as the team celebrates its 2022 home opener against Eastern Connecticut State University. First pitch for that single contest is set for 3 p.m. on March 9th.
