Baseball Drops Pair at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team was swept during a Skyline Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling at the United States Merchant Marine Academy by the scores of 5-0 and 9-0.

With the results, the Panthers are now 10-14 overall and 6-6 in the league. Meanwhile, the Mariners improved to 17-13 and 9-3, respectively.

Game 1 - USMMA 5, Purchase 0 (7 inn.)

The opening game of the day proved to be a tough go for the visitors, as Purchase finished with just one hit over the seven innings. The lone single came from James Shea (SR/Brooklyn, NY) in the top of the sixth.

As for the hosts, USMMA started the game slowly with 1-2-3 innings across the first, second and third frames, before the runs materialized in the fourth.

In the stanza, the Mariners hit two RBI-singles and a two-run triple to notch four runs and jump ahead.

Two innings later, a third RBI-single pushed USMMA ahead to the eventual final score of 5-0.

On the hill in game one for Purchase was Ryan Castrataro (JR/Mahopac, NY). The lefty went all six-innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits in the loss.

Game 2 - USMMA 9, Purchase 0

While the Panthers' bats were nearly silent in game one, they rumbled a bit in game two to the tune of six hits. However, despite the increase in hits, Purchase was still shutout for the second time on the day.

Individually, James May (SR/Floral Park, NY) finished with a single and double, while Shea and Jason Sebastiano (SO/Brooklyn, NY) each tallied doubles in the effort.

Even with the lack of runs, Purchase kept pace with USMMA over the opening four innings Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't until that fifth that things changed in a big way, as the Mariners' offense exploded with eight runs in the frame. The hosts added another run in the six to push the margin to 9-0 where it finished.

On the mound, Alex Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY) got the start and went four innings. During that span, he fanned three and allowed just three hits.

After Doskoez left, Drew Stabinsky (SO/Floral Park, NY) came on in relief and was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits over 2/3 inning of work.

Up next for Purchase is the final non-conference doubleheader of the season, as the team travels to Connecticut to face Albertus Magnus College on April 18th. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
