Women's Lax Falls to Mount St. Mary on Senior Night

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was beaten in a Skyline Conference matchup Friday night, falling to Mount Saint Mary College by the score of 20-1 on Senior Night.

Before the contest began, the Panthers honored their quartet of seniors - Kaily Chavez (Brooklyn, NY), Dara Studnitzer (Glen Cove, NY), Katie Borger (Bellmore, NY) and Sigrid Cassell (Huntington, NY) - with a pregame ceremony.

During the festivities, the four players were joined by family, friends and teammates, as gifts and photos were exchanged, and words were read.

At the end, the entire team posed at midfield to commemorate the occasion. After the celebration, the Panthers moved onto the task at hand - the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College.

However, from the onset, the guests proved to be a formidable foe.

During the opening quarter, the Knights (8-5 overall, 1-4 Skyline) outscored Purchase, 6-0, before extending that margin to 13-0 at the halftime break.

The scoring run continued over the third and fourth quarters, until Cassell broke the scoreless streak for the Panthers with her first strike of the season. The goal came on an unassisted, man-up effort with 10:21 remaining.

Individually for the seniors, Cassell finished with the goal, two ground balls and two draw controls, while Borger recorded two draw controls, one ground ball and five shots.

Studnitzer collected one ground ball and one caused turnover, while Chavez tallied one ground ball in the effort.

Elsewhere, Lauren Pudelka (JR/Danbury, CT) grabbed a team-high five draw controls, while Casandra Schmoger (JR/Islip, NY) finished with six saves.

Up next for Purchase (1-8, 0-5 Skyline) is the home finale, as the team welcomes Farmingdale State College on April 27th at 4 p.m.

#5 Kaily Chavez:  a 2022 walk-on, this was Kaily's first year playing the sport of lacrosse.  She has come a long way and grown her defensive skills in a short amount of time.  Kaily has worked hard to learn the game and we are proud of how far she has come. Kaily is accompanied by her friend, Karissa Lenardo.

#6 Dara Studnitzer: Dara joined our team this year after transferring from Vassar where she played field hockey.  Dara is a very smart player and an extremely reliable player.  Any assignment she is given on the field is done well.  She has come up big for our team on the defensive side of the ball, and she will be greatly missed next season. She was part of every starting lineup this year and enters tonight's matchup with a season total 10 ground balls and three draw controls.  Dara is accompanied by her mom, Debbie, and brother, Sam.

#3 Katie Borger: Katie, who is also a member of our women's soccer team, is a remarkable athlete.  She has worked so hard to improve her game, becoming one of our top midfielders this season.  We relied upon Katie for her speed and defensive abilities, but she has proven to be valuable on offense and the draw as well.  Across 14 career starts, she amassed 12 ground balls, nine draw controls, eight caused turnovers and a pair of goals. Katie is so committed and a wonderful teammate.  We appreciate everything she has done for this program. Katie is accompanied by her mom, Alisa.

#14 Sigrid Cassell: Sigrid is a four-year starter and the anchor of our defense.  She is often given the task of marking our opponents' best player, and she is always successful.  Sig was also named captain for the 2022 season. She has provided leadership and guidance for our new players, and is an excellent communicator on and off the field.  Sig is leaving behind some big shoes to fill for our team's defense.  She makes the other players around her better.  We are so grateful for all of her contributions to our team. She enters tonight's game with a career that spans 20 games and includes 46 ground balls, 16 cause turnovers, 12 draw controls, seven goals and three assists.  Sig is accompanied by her father, Geoff, boyfriend Ethan and friend/soccer teammate Allie.
