Solid Pitching, Timely Hitting Fuels Doubleheader Sweep

Panthers record 3-2 and 4-3 victories over Bay Path University

PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase College softball team continued its winning ways Tuesday evening, netting its second doubleheader sweep in less than 24 hours. The Panthers stayed hot following Monday's victories over the College of Mount Saint Vincent, and returned to the diamond a day later to defeat visiting Bay Path University in both ends, 3-2 and 4-3, of a non-conference matchup.

In the process, Purchase improved to 6-8 in the early season, while Bay Path dropped to 2-12 overall.

Senior pitcher Kelly Agostini (Centereach, NY) channeled her 2021 season—a campaign that saw the veteran Panther in the circle for every inning of every game (140 innings, 27 games). On Tuesday, Agostini added another two complete-game performances to boast as she advanced her season record to an even .500 (4-4).

Game One: Purchase 3, Bay Path 2

The Panthers tacked on a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back. Brianna Palermo (JR/Hyde Park, NY) was first score, swiping home on a double steal with teammate Olivia Audia (FR/Dover Plains, NY, who stole second.

Bay Path broke its scoring ice in the top of the third on a Madisyn Vera RBI double to left field. The Wildcats held Purchase scoreless in the bottom half of the inning but would later give up a run with a walk. With bases loaded, a full count (KBKBBB) and two outs lighting up the board, Palermo took ball four (RBI) to send Alexandria Perez (SR/Bronx, NY) home to score, 3-1.

In the top of the sixth with bases loaded, the visitors were one hit away from a comeback but Agostini hurled three perfect pitches for the strikeout that retired the inning.

The Panther defense continued its momentum in the seventh, recording a quick three outs to secure the 3-2 victory.

Game Two: Purchase 4, Bay Path 3
Purchase trailed 2-1 after the opening inning, but went on to record three runs while holding Bay Path scoreless over the three innings.

Perez earned the game-winning RBI with a single to left field that brought Audia in from third base.

The visitors lit up the board in the fifth but their effort fell short as Purchase held on for the 4-3 win.

Bronzi and Julia Marsala (SO/Shorham, NY) led the Panther offense in game two with two hits and one RBI each.
Perez went 1-for-2 with one RBI and came around to score once, while Olivia McLellan (FR/Corning, NY) chipped in with one hit on two trips to the plate.

Agostini faced a two-game total of 62 batters (55 AB), tossing nearly 175 pitches over 14 innings of work. She allowed five runs to score on 15 hits, while walking five and striking out nine Wildcat batters.

Purchase looks to continue its winning ways as it returns to Skyline action at home this Saturday. The Panthers will play host to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College (L.I.) in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
