Purchase Tops Hunter to Remain Undefeated

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Three games, three wins.

For the first time in program history, the Purchase College men's soccer team has started a season with three straight victories, as the Panthers edged Hunter College 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless opening half, it was the Hawks (1-4) that scored first once play resumed, finding the back of the net in the 47th minute.

14 minutes later, the Panthers responded with their first chance of the half, as first-year forward Luca Li Vigni (Staten Island, NY) tied things with an individual effort in the 61st.

With renewed life, Purchase's offensive continued to push as it looked for the goal to edge it ahead.

That moment finally came in the 73rd minute, when senior defender Devonte Dawson (Yonkers, NY) placed a shot past Hunter's keeper via a feed from Ethan Dillon (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY).

Now with the lead, the spotlight shifted to the Panthers' defense as the guests held firm during the final moments of the contest.

In fact, Purchase's backline was so good on the day, that it allowed just two shots, neither of which were on goal, over the last 30 minutes of play to seal the 2-1 win.

In total, both sides finished with identical margins for shots on goal (4-4) and corner kicks (3-3).

For the Panthers, Li Vigni led the offense with five shots (two on goal), while junior goalie Mario Olmedo (East Elmhurst, NY) collected three saves and the win.

Up next for Purchase is a return to its home field, as the Panthers host Lehman College on September 19th at 7 p.m. You can follow along right here.
