Panthers Edged Out by Privateers

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Purchase College women's soccer suffered a 3-2 setback to host SUNY Maritime on a blustery Friday evening at Reinhart Field.

The Panthers (3-2, 1-2 Skyline) held an early 2-1 lead but the Privateers (3-3, 2-0 Skyline) evened the score on a penalty kick in the 26th minute.

Senior tri-captain Kristen Purcell (Sauquoit, NY) broke the scoring ice at 3:56 with a blast from 10 yards out. Sophomore forward Rebecca Quick (Millbrook, NY) earned the assist after beating two Maritime defenders and sending a through ball to Purcell.

The lead was short-lived as Maritime's Anya Josberger connected with Courtney Curley, who scored the equalizer at 6:08.

Less than 10 minutes later, Purcell punched it past Maritime's keeper Alessia Muccitelli for a second time. Senior tri-captain Lauren Pudelka (Danbury, CT) recorded the assist on the go-ahead goal.

The contest continued as a back-and-forth battle until a debatable call at 25:52 awarded Maritime a trip to the PK line. Josberger hit the upper net, tying the game at 2-apiece.

With wind gusts reaching 30 mph due northwest, Purchase was tasked with a difficult goal to defend in the second half. To that end, Maritime peppered that goal with 17 shots over the final 45 minutes while PC recorded four.

Curley ripped back-to-back shots to open the second half but both attempts were shut down by Panther netminder and Skyline Rookie of the Week Carolyn Hough (FR/Massapequa, NY). A Maritime corner kick followed the pair of impressive diving saves by Hough. Unfortunately for Purchase, three Privateer shots would follow with one resulting in the eventual game-winner.

Hough (2-2) tallied 11 saves despite picking up the loss. Muccitelli (3-3) had five for the win.

Purchase will take a break from Skyline competition as the team returns to its home turf on Monday to play host to Brooklyn College for a non-conference showdown starting at 7 p.m.
