PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team made quick work of visiting Brooklyn College Monday night in a 2-0 non-conference shutout.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Panthers and advanced their record to 4-2 overall. In defeat, the visiting Bulldogs dropped to 0-7 overall.
Senior forward
Kristen Purcell (Sauquoit, NY) and freshman midfielder
Julieth Velasquez (White Plains, NY) tallied one goal apiece to lead the Panther attack.
Purcell collected a loose ball off a deflected free kick taken by senior defender
Michelle Gomez (Oceanside, NY) and drilled one to the far post from outside the 18-yard box. The eventual game-winning tally came at 15:31.
Less than 10 minutes later, a Purchase corner kick resulted in a scramble at the top of Brooklyn's 6-yard box. Sophomore forward
Rebecca Quick (Millbrook, NY) used a header to find the feet of Velasquez, who tapped the ball over the goal line for the PC tally.
Out of the halftime break, Purchase controlled most of the possession but was unable to execute in the final third of the field. The Panther defense forced Brooklyn into a similar final 45 minutes, allowing just one shot on goal en route to the 2-0 victory.
Purchase outshot the Bulldogs 20-12 (9-6 on goal), but Brooklyn held the advantage in corners, 6-3.
Senior netminder
Haley Cascio (Deer Park, NY) earned her second win of the season with six saves for PC. Brooklyn's Angelina Vasta made seven stops over 90 minutes.
Purchase will look to keep its momentum going this Wednesday when the Panthers return to their home turf for a matchup against Skyline foe Mount Saint Vincent. Game start is set for 7:15 p.m.
