PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team bested Yeshiva University, 4-0, Thursday evening in the Panthers' home opener.
A delayed start didn't seem to slow down the hosts, who put away two goals in the opening 30 minutes of action.
Rebecca Quick (SO/Millbrook, NY) broke the scoring ice with a perfectly placed header off a
Michelle Gomez (SR/Oceanside, NY) cross from the left side.
Less than five minutes later, standout rookie
Julieth Velasquez (FR/White Plains, NY) burst on the scene. The Panther newcomer rebounded a deflected shot and knocked one in off the outside of the right foot, recording her first collegiate goal and the second of the game for PC.
Velasquez continued to ignite in the second half, netting back-to-back shots for the hat trick. A short pass from
Kristiana Brunder (JR/Holbrook, NY) inside the 18-yard box gave Purchase a 3-0 edge. The Panthers pushed it to 4-0 on an endline pass from
Kristen Purcell (SR/Sauquoit, NY) to Velasquez, who one-timed it into the back of the net.
To boot, the combined team effort put the finishing touches on a memorable Blue and Orange debut, helping first-year head coach
Nick Malvai earn his first collegiate victory behind the bench.
Purchase won the shot differential (32-3) and the corner kicks (8-0), among other important categories on the evening.
The win improved Purchase to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Yeshiva dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Up next, the Panthers will head to SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday (Sept. 10) for a non-conference game starting at 3 p.m.
