Panthers Top Pratt in Five-Set Thriller

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - For the first time since March 7, 2020, the Purchase College men's volleyball team played a five-set match.

And just like on that day nearly three years ago, the Panthers emerged victorious Tuesday night, this time rallying to beat Pratt Institute in a thriller.

Set scores for the contest were 24-26, 25-13, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-5.

The Panthers (2-3 overall) finished with 39 kills and a .189 hitting percentage, as the duo of Marcus Garguilo (SO/Port Washington, NY) and Luca Spadinger (FR/Loundonville, NY) powered the victory.

The sophomore finished with a match-high 21.5 points on 14 kills, three aces, three solo blocks and three block assists. Meanwhile, Spadinger tied the match-high with 14 kills, while chipping in a game-high 16 digs.

On the night, Purchase was forced to rally twice after dropping the first and third sets. Following the team's victory in set four to tie the contest, the Panthers headed to the bench with visible excitement and momentum.

Meanwhile, the Cannoneers of Pratt (0-3) seemed uncomfortable as the winner-take-all frame began.

As a result, the guests scored three of the first four points in the set, before using 8-0 scoring run late to effectively seal the match.

In the end, Pratt finished with fewer kills (33) and a worse hitting percentage (-.024) compared to Purchase.

The Blue and Orange also received better individual performances on the night, as Idris Idris (SR/Bronx, NY) led all players with 24 assists, while adding 13 digs and seven kills.

Up next for the Panthers is a nine-day break, as the squad won't be in action again until February 9th at John Jay College. That contest is set to begin at 6 p.m.
