Panthers Tagged with Non-Conference Loss

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Purchase men's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to John Jay Thursday evening, falling 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18 inside the Doghouse.

The non-conference tally earned the host Bloodhounds their second-consecutive win as they advance to 2-1 overall. The Panthers dropped to 2-4 in defeat.

Purchase received five kills and a .500 hitting percentage from sophomore defensive specialist Jasper Zeray (Brooklyn, NY). Flawless on the attack, Zeray finished the evening without a single error on 10 attempts. Senior setter Idris Idris (Bronx, NY) tossed up 12 assists and also closed the match without an error, hitting .600 with three kills on five attempts. Sophomore middle blocker Marcus Garguilo recorded a team-high six kills, while senior outside hitter Chris Posillico (Saltaire, NY) led the Panthers in digs (7) and service aces (3).

A slew of Bloodhounds contributed John Jay's scoring, led by Akashdeep Sing (.600) and Stephen De Stefani (.455), who tied for the match-high with seven kills apiece.

After John Jay took the opening two sets, Purchase nearly pulled out a win in a tightly contested third frame.

The Panthers found their rhythm early in the set, recording a trio of aces to open up a 6-1 advantage. Kills from Garguilo and Posillico, and an ace from Luca Spadinger (FR/Loudonville, NY) produced another run that pushed PC to a 14-8 edge over the Bloodhounds.

John Jay fired back with four unanswered points and slowly chipped away to come within two points of a tied match (15-13).

Despite a kill from Idris on the next serve and the attempt to preserve Purchase's lead, John Jay would rattle off a 12-2 run to secure the set win.

PC will return to action on Monday, Feb. 13, as the Panthers head to Madison, N.J. for a non-conference match against Drew University. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
