Panthers Fall to Manhattanville on Senior Day

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's tennis team took to their home courts for the last time of the regular season Tuesday afternoon, battling Manhattanville College in a 6-3 Skyline Conference loss.

Prior to the start of the match, the Panthers (4-4, 2-2 SKY) honored the program's lone senior as part of the Senior Day festivities. Elaina Coppola (White Plains, NY), a three-year member of the team, was recognized for her dedication, commitment and unwavering spirit on and off the court.

Manhattanville (4-2, 2-1 SKY) led 2-1 coming out of doubles play.

Purchase picked up the No. 3 doubles point following a Sierra Blanco (SO/New York, NY) and Harley Colletti (JR/Bardonia, NY) 8-4 win over Sara King and Elizabeth Dolce.

The visitors broke the scoring ice in singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot and later pushed their advantage to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top flight.

The Panthers fired back with two unanswered points to close in on the Valiants' 4-3 lead. Blanco recorded a fifth singles win, 6-4, 6-3, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 triumph from Novalie Nguyen (SO/Macedon, NY) at the No. 6 spot.

The Panthers' comeback attempt fell short however, as Purchase came out on the losing end of its second and fourth doubles matches. Olivia Menchell (JR/Los Angeles, CA) and Coppola displayed athleticism in hard-fought matches despite being tagged with 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 defeats, respectively.

Purchase will look to rebound in its regular season finale at Farmindale State on Oct. 14 at noon.
