Panthers Fall at Maritime in Four Sets

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team suffered a defeat Thursday night, falling to Maritime College in four sets.

Scores for the contest were 24-26, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13.

With the result, the Panthers moved to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in the Skyline Conference. For the Privateers, they jumped to 6-10 and 3-4, respectively.

The night started out well for the Blue and Orange, as they rallied from behind to take the opening set.

While the Panthers opened the frame with five-straight points, they eventually found themselves tied midway through before the hosts used a six-point run to snatch the lead late, 17-12.

Purchase fought back though, managing to tie the game up at 21-all and 23-all, before scoring the final three points of the stanza to claim the victory, 26-24.

Over the first set, the offense was rocking for the guests as it hit .157 with 15 kills. Over the final three sets though, things cooled dramatically as Purchase compiled just 16 kills the rest of the way.

As a result, Maritime held decisive leads in all three sets they won, as they sealed the victory with a dominant fourth frame.

Overall, the Panthers finished the match with a .028 hitting percentage and 31 kills, while the Privateers totaled 46 kills on .176 hitting.

Individually, Lilith Bastek-Ochoa (JR/Sag Harbor, NY) and Ava Landreth (FR/Brooklyn, NY) each finished with nine kills, while Lauren White (JR/Washington, DC) added eight kills.

Natalia Leite (FR/Thornwood, NY) totaled 26 assists and 18 digs, while Maya Brown (FR/Carteret, NJ) recorded a team-high 19 digs.

Up next for the Panthers is the final tri-match of the 2023 season, as the team travels to Pennsylvania to face King's College and SUNY Old Westbury on October 14th.
