BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team dropped a Skyline Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, falling at St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn by the score of 2-1.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 7-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the league. For the Bears, they jumped to 5-6 and 4-3, respectively.
The Blue and Orange started the game with their foot on the gas pedal, as they attempted to find a first-half goal. That golden moment nearly came in the 20th minute, butÂ
Ermin Mackic (FR/Yonkers, NY) had his shot cleared off the line by the defensive backline to keep things level.
For the first half, the two sides entered the midway break even at 0-0, even though Purchase produced more overall shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks.
When play resumed, things began to balance out as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn created early second-half chances. The Panthers' defense managed to hold the Bears at bay, while the offense prepared for the right time to counterattack.
That moment finally came in the 61st minute, whenÂ
Oliver Broun (FR/Athens, GA) scored on an individual effort to put the guests in front.
However, the hosts were not fazed, as just 11 minutes later, they found the equalizer.
With the game level once more, all that was needed was one more moment of brilliance to score the game winner, and much to the chagrin of the Panthers, it arrived in the 77th minute for the Bears.
In fact, while Purchase opened the game quickly on offense with chance after chance, that stopped down the stretch as the guests were held without a shot over the final 23 minutes.
Despite that fact, the Panthers still outshot the Bears on the day overall (16-13) and on goal (8-5).
In goal,
Jack Gjokaj (JR/Thornwood, NY) totaled three saves in the effort.
Up next for the Blue and Orange is a return to their home field, as they welcome the College of Mount Saint Vincent on October 17th at 7 p.m.
