PURCHASE, N.Y. — Purchase College held visiting Mount Saint Mary College scoreless until the 65th minute of a Skyline Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon. Despite their valiant effort to keep the visiting offense at bay, the Panthers closed the game in defeat, 3-0.
Three different Knights scored for Mount Saint Mary (5-8-3, 5-2-3 SKY). Leah Nemec netted her first goal of the season and opened up the scoring with a hard-hit shot off the cross from Victoria Maffettone at 64:35.
Nine minutes later, a loose ball created chaos inside the box and a scoring opportunity for Lily Tanko. The sophomore midfielder tapped it over the goal line to push the Knights' lead to 2-0.
Mount tacked on its third and final goal on a Mary Langan breakaway in the 84th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Chistina Kakavas picked up her fourth shutout of the season after making two stops for the visitors.
Sophomore netminder Carolyn Hough (Massapequa, NY) had a busy afternoon for the Panthers, finishing with 11 saves over 90 minutes of action.
Mount Saint Mary closed with a lopsided advantage in each team category, outshooting Purchase 45-5 overall, 14-2 in shots on goal and added a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Purchase (4-9-4, 2-7 SKY) is back at home this week with a Skyline game against St. Joseph's University (LI) on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.
