PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team was looking to register a Skyline Conference win in their final home game of the season, but St. Joseph's University scored once in the opening half and tacked on two more after the break to post a 3-0 victory over the Panthers on Tuesday night.
St. Joe's connected early, scoring the opening goal less than five minutes into play. Emma Furey sent a perfectly-placed corner kick to Julia Cruz, who lit up the board with a header from the inside the box.
The Panthers held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the half, but were also limited in their own attacking third, firing off just one shot in the opening 45 minutes.
After the break, the Golden Eagles pushed the pace of the game and continued to hold the advantage in possession. St. Joe's put together 29 shots, including 16 on target, in the second half. Despite a 14-save performance from Purchase goalie
Carolyn Hough (SO/Massapequa, NY) in the stanza, two shots found the back of the net to secure 3-0 win for the visitors.
Ana Lombardo and Nicole DeCanio came off the Golden Eagle bench to score one goal each.
Hough recorded a season-high 19 saves in total for Purchase. SJU goalie Kristin Vahle picked up three saves for the win.
In defeat, Purchase dropped to 4-10-4 on the season and 3-8 in the Skyline. The Golden Eagles improved to 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the league.
Purchase will conclude its 2023 campaign at Farmingdale State on Thursday. The Skyline matchup is slated for 6 p.m.
