Panthers Defeated by Mount Saint Mary College

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team was defeated by Mount Saint Mary College Thursday night, dropping the Skyline Conference matchup in four sets.

Scores for the contest were 25-14, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-19.

With the result, the Panthers moved to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the league. For the Knights, the win was the first of the season as they jumped to 1-13 and 1-2.

Despite enjoying a decent night hitting the ball, Purchase couldn't overcome the offense of the guests. In total, the Knights totaled 43 kills on .129 hitting, while the Panthers managed totals of 27 and .063, respectively.

Individually, Lilith Bastek-Ochoa (JR/Sag Harbor, NY) led the way with seven kills and four aces.

Ava Landreth (FR/Brooklyn, NY) chipped in five kills and five blocks, while Natalia Leite (FR/Thornwood, NY) added game-high totals in assists (21) and digs (18).

As for the action on the court, the guests raced out to a decisive lead in set one, setting the tone for the night.

Following the opening-set victory, the Knights once again used long rallies to create separation between themselves and Purchase. However this time, the Panthers rallied to tighten the game.

With the score, 21-13, the Blue and Orange reeled off six-straight points to make it a close contest late.

The Black and Blue then answered with three straight points, before the Panthers did the same. With the score 24-22, Mount closed out the frame with a kill to secure the massive 2-0 set lead.

Despite the deficit, Purchase wasn't deterred in its resolve. That shined through in the third frame, as the hosts grabbed the lead early and didn't let it go.

With a set in hand, the Panthers came out in the fourth and final set looking to even things up. But the Knights weren't going to be denied, as they responded with their best frame of the night to seal the win.

Up next for the Blue and Orange is a home matchup with St. Joseph's University-Long Island on October 10th at 7 p.m. You can follow it here.
