NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team suffered a rare defeat Saturday afternoon, falling to Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline Conference matchup, 3-2.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 7-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the league. For the Knights, the victory was their first of the season as they now sit at 1-8-2 and 1-3-2, respectively.
The hosts struck first on the day, finding the back of net in just the third minute to grab the early advantage. Neither side managed a goal the rest of the half, leading to a 1-0 score at the break.
That margin continued as the second half progressed before the final 27 minutes saw four strikes between the two teams.
Purchase scored the first of the four goals in the 64th minute, when
Jair Cano (FR/White Plains, NY) scored a headed goal off an
Ermin Mackic (FR/Yonkers, NY) free kick.
With the score tied, the Panthers thought they had renewed life. And they did ... for about 50 seconds, until the Knights answered right back to regain the lead.
Nine minutes later, Mount put the final touch on its victory, finding the back of the net once more.
Mackic managed to trim the margin in half with an 89th minute penalty, but the Panthers weren't able to find another one before the final whistle.
In the end, the Panthers were outshot 21-9 overall. In goal,
Jack Gjokaj (JR/Thornwood, NY) finished with eight saves.
Up next for the Blue and Orange is a return home, as the squad hosts Farmingdale State College on October 11th at 7 p.m.
