PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College outscored visiting Manhattanville College in the first and fourth quarters of a Skyline Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night.
The host Panthers, however, combined for just nine points across the second and third stanza, allowing the Valiants to walk away with a 65-39 final decision.
Manhattanville's Amanda Orlando scored the opening basket before freshman forward Nia Henry (Brooklyn, NY) lit up the board for Purchase on a layup. The Panthers went on to score another nine unanswered points thanks to the combined shooting efforts of Charles Neb (SO/Longmont, CO), Asian Clinton (FR/Portland, OR), Carlye Graff (JR/Nyack, NY) and Halle Greaige (FR/).
Purchase led 14-5 after the opening 10 minutes and stretched it to 16-5 at the start of the second quarter. The layup by Jaile Martinez-Gomez (FR/Inwood, NY), however, was the only scoring play Purchase would record in the stanza. Meanwhile, Manhattanville erupted with a 24-0 run to take a 29-16 lead at halftime.
The visitors continued to connect after the break, stretching their advantage to as many as 30 points.
Despite holding a 16-12 edge over Manhattanville in the fourth quarter, Purchase was unable to erase the mid-game deficit and would close the game in defeat, 65-39.
Three Valiants finished in double digit scoring, including a pair of double double performances. Niyona Smith led all players with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Julianna Kascic was next in line with 12 points and a game-high 12 boards. Angela Downey capped the double digit scoring with 12 points.
For Purchase, Clinton finished with eight points and seven rebounds, while Neb and Kendall Larson (FR/Staten Island, NY) tallied six markers and two boards each.
With first-year coach Stephen Bower at the helm, the Panthers look to bounce back from Wednesday's loss when they return to their home court this Saturday to take on non-conference Medgar Evers College at noon.
