PURCHASE, N.Y. – A tough fourth-quarter was too much for the Purchase College women's basketball team to overcome, resulting in a 78-69 Skyline Conference loss to Yeshiva University on Sunday at home.
Purchase (0-8, 0-6 SKY) opened strong, knocking down a trio of consecutive 3-pointers to take a 9-7 lead. Freshman guard
Aysiah Clinton (Portland, OR) lit up the board first with back-to-back triples, while junior guard
Carlye Graff (Nyack, NY) notched the go-ahead tally.
With just under a minute remaining in the quarter, freshman guard
Kendall Larsen connected from beyond the arc to stretch PC's lead to 17-14. Just when the Panthers appeared to be on the brink getting some separation with the four-point lead, Yeshiva (4-6, 3-4) fired back with a 4-0 run to close the quarter at an even 17-17 scoreline.
The second quarter opened as another back-and-forth affair, with three lead changes in the first two minutes. Sophomore guard
Charlee Neb (Longmont, CO) netted a 3-point bucket for the hosts (20-19) but Shai Rahamin mirrored with a triple for the visitors (21-20). Rahamin's tally gave Yeshiva a lead it would hold for the remainder of the stanza.
At the half, the Maccabees led 38-30.
Using a commanding 29-20 scoring advantage over the third quarter, Purchase came from behind to tie the game at 59. The high-octane offense suddenly went cold in crunch time though, as the hosts missed 17 of their final 20 shot attempts from the floor.
Meanwhile, Yeshiva shot over 66 percent down the stretch to pull away for the win.
Despite the upset, a trio of Panthers finished in double-digit scoring. Neb led the attack with 16 points, nine assists and three steals. Clinton recorded 15 points and Graff added another 13 points. Larsen paced the board count with 11 total, while freshman forward
Jessica McHugh was close behind with 10 total rebounds.
Maccabee senior guard Daniella Bessler was a force for the visitors, finishing with an impressive 37 points and 11 rebounds. Yuval Nitzan recorded 18 points and seven assists, while Rahamin chipped in with 11 points and six assists.
Purchase will look to bounce back from Sunday's loss when the team returns to their home court for a Skyline matchup against Farmingdale State on Tuesday (Dec. 12) at 6 p.m.
