PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team was defeated by The City College of New York Tuesday night, dropping the non-conference matchup in straight sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19. With the result, the Panthers dropped to 3-7 overall, as the Beavers moved to 6-0.
On the night, the CCNY offense was king, finishing with 42 kills, which were more than double what Purchase recorded, and a .210 hitting percentage.
Despite the offensive fireworks from the guests, the Panthers kept things close throughout each set, before ultimately fading late due to runs from the visitors.
In set one, the hosts trailed by just a point, 15-14, before a six-point run swung things in favor of the Beavers.
The same thing happened in the middle set, as the guests turned an early 7-5 lead into a 15-7 advantage shortly afterwards.
Finally, the Panthers looked like they might extend the match another frame with a solid performance in set three, as they raced out to a 14-11 margin.
However, one last explosion from CCNY changed that narrative as the squad scored nine straight to leap in front of the hosts.
For the match, Purchase finished with 21 kills and a .060 hitting percentage.
Marcus Garguilo (SO/Port Washington, NY) finished with a team-high nine kills and 10.5 points, whileÂ
Idris Idris (SR/Bronx, NY) added 18 assists and eight digs in the loss.
Up next for the Panthers is more non-conference road action, as the team welcomes Medgar Evers College on February 23rd. That match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
