Men's Volleyball Bested in Five Sets

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team fought until the very end Thursday night, before ultimately succumbing to Medgar Evers College in five sets.

Scores for the contest were 15-25, 25-16, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-9. With the loss, the Panthers fell to 3-8 overall. For the Cougars, the squad improved to 2-1.

It was a tale of two halves for the hosts, as they dominated offensively in the two sets they won, while struggling in the three they lost.

For the match, Purchase hit .097 with 38 kills.

In sets one and four, the Panthers tallied hitting percentages of .364 and .118, respectively, which easily outpaced Medgar Evers.

On the other side, the Blue and Orange finished with marks of .133 and .000 in sets two and three, before compiling their worst hitting of the night in the deciding frame, -.087.

Despite the defeat, Purchase fought valiantly.

After cruising to an opening-frame win, the squad fell in the next two sets before rallying in the fourth to tie the contest. With renewed life, the hosts continued to battle in the fifth and final set.

The Panthers opened with a 4-2 run, until a 6-1 response from the guests turned the match in their favor, 8-5. Purchase answered with three-straight points, tying things at 8-8, before the two sides traded points to a 9-9 scoreline.

From there though, the magic ran dry as the guests proceeded to score the final six points of the night to claim the set and match.

Individually, Chris Posillico (SR/Saltaire, NY) finished with a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs.

Marcus Garguilo (SO/Port Washington, NY) tallied 13 kills, two aces, five block assists and one solo block to led the squad with 18.5 points.

Jasper Zeray (SO/Brooklyn, NY) collected 20 digs, while Idris Idris (SR/Bronx, NY) chipped in 35 assists.

Up next for the Panthers is more non-conference home action, as the team faces Regis College on March 6th. That contest is set to begin at 6 p.m. and you can follow it here.
