Baseball Earns Doubleheader Sweep at Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a pair of wins Friday afternoon, after besting Bard College in back-to-back road contests.

Scores for the day were 3-1 and 10-7. With the wins, the Panthers moved to 3-2 overall. For the Raptors, they now sit at 0-2.

Game One: Purchase 3, Bard 1 (7 inn)

The day started well for the Panthers, as the squad scored two runs over the first two innings.

Sam Saltzman (SO/Old Bethpage, NY) knocked in the first run via a sacrifice fly in the first frame, before Cameron Cruz (SO/Bronx, NY) did the same thing in the second.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third, when an RBI-groundout from Bard trimmed the lead in half.

However, that was the only run starter Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) allowed in the win, as he was locked-in all game. In the victory, he tossed a complete game, allowed just five hits and struckout six.

The final Purchase run came in the top of the sixth, when the Panthers used their third sacrifice fly of the day, this one from Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY), to pad the lead.

In the win, seven players recorded a least one hit for the Blue and Orange, as Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) powered the offense with a double and a triple.

Game Two: Purchase 10, Bard 7 (6 inn)

While game one could be best described as a defensive affair, game two was anything but that.

The two teams combined for 17 runs on 22 hits over just six innings of action, as the contest was called early due to darkness.

Game two also marked the second-straight contest that the guests opened the first inning with runs, as RBI-singles from Saltzman and Daly gave them an early 2-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived though, as Bard used some early fireworks of its own to grab a quick 7-2 lead by the third inning.

A doubleheader split seemed likely over the next couple of innings, until the top of the fifth, when the Panthers began to rally back.

In the frame, the guests tallied four runs off RBI-hits from Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY), Mason Compton (SO/Carmel, NY) and Joe Salerno (SO/White Plains, NY) to trim the margin to just a single run, 7-6.

One inning later, Della Mura played the role of hero as he knocked in the winning run with a two-RBI single.

A few batters later, Scarry hit another RBI-single, while Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) drew a bases-loaded walk to score the final two runs of the night, making it 10-7.

From there, Purchase tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth inning, and the game was called right after due to darkness.

On the mound, starter Ryan Castrataro (SR/Mahopac, NY) threw just one inning before being replaced by Cass Muller (JR/Brooklyn, NY), who pitched two innings.

The winning pitcher on the day was reliever Jonathan Uzzo (FR/Bethpage, NY), after he allowed just one hit over two innings. Justin Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) then came on in the sixth to finish off the game in the non-save situation.

At the plate, Daly continued to shine for the Panthers, as he finished with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

Saltzman, Compton, Della Mura and Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) each tallied two hits in the win.

Up next for Purchase is more non-conference action, as the squad welcomes John Jay College to campus on March 12th at 11 a.m. You can follow along right here.
