Purchase Tops John Jay Twice

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon, collecting a pair of non-conference wins over John Jay College.

Scores for the contests were 10-5 and 4-1. The Panthers have now won four straight and sit at 5-2 overall. For the Bloodhounds, they dropped to 1-11.

Game One: Purchase 10, John Jay 5 (7 inn)

John Jay opened the contest with a run in the first inning, only for the hosts to match that score in the bottom half of the frame, thanks to an RBI-single from Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY).

Purchase, with some help for the guests, then scored four runs in the second via a pair of errors and a wild pitch, before a passed ball in the third allowed in another run.

One inning later, the Panthers scored two more following an RBI-triple from Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY) and a sacrifice fly from Mason Compton (SO/Carmel, NY), extending the lead to 8-1.

The two sides then went scoreless in the fifth inning, as Purchase seemed primed to cruise to the win. However, the Bloodhounds didn't go down without a fight, scoring four runs in the sixth to trim the deficit to 8-5.

The rally was short lived though, as Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) reignited the Panthers' offense with a two-RBI double in the sixth. Purchase then sealed the game one inning later by taking the contest, 10-5.

Individually, Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) finished with three hits (two triples) and two runs scored.

Reyes finished with a pair of hits, while Daly recorded a hit, an RBI, two runs and two walks.

On the mound, Purchase starting pitcher KJ Dow (FR/East Northport, NY) earned the win after he went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits.

He also collected six strikeouts and didn't allow a hit throw the first five innings.

Game Two: Purchase 4, John Jay 1 (7 inn)

Following the offensive explosion in game one, things simmered down in game two as the Panthers edged John Jay with pitching.

Starter Brandon Reybok (FR/Lindenhurst, NY), Drew Stabinsky (JR/Floral Park, NY) and Daly combined to produce a one run, three-hit masterpiece in the victory.

Reybok, who earned the win, went 5 2/3 innings and struck out four, while Daly collected his first career save. The lone run the hosts allowed in the contest came via a wild pitch, as the Panther arms were locked in.

As for the team's bats, they started slower compared to game one, but came alive at just the right time.

After an error allowed Purchase to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth, the hosts used back-to-back RBI-singles in the fifth from Daly and Della Mura to grab the lead, 3-1.

One inning later, Castrogiovanni knocked in a run via a sacrifice fly to build the lead to its final line, 4-1.

Individually, Della Mura and Tristen Abreu (FR/Mineola, NY) each collected two hits and a stolen base in the performance.

Up next for Purchase is a mid-week showdown against SUNY New Paltz on March 15th. That home matchup is set to begin at 3 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
