PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College men's tennis team started its 2023 campaign off hot with a 6-3 victory over non-conferemce Brooklyn College at home on Thursday.
The Panthers took the lead through doubles play thanks to the performances by the top two pairings. The No. 1 duo
Julian Szuper (5th/New York, NY) and
Eli Palagatshevof (FR/Yonkers, NY) defeated Ryan Sham and Aymen Kuc 8-4, while
Yuta Kawamura (FR/Greenwich, CT) and
Ben Joory (SR/Port Washington, NY) clinched the point for the Panthers with their 8-3 victory at second doubles.
Purchase kept up the momentum in singles play. Recording wins at the top four flights, Szuper, Palagatshevof, Joory and Kawamura each picked up their second tally of the day. Earning the nod at No. 1 singles, Szuper took down Ryan Sham, 6-3, 6-3. Palagatshevof netted a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Joory battled to a 7-6, 6-3 triumph at third singles. Fourth-seeded Kawamura capped the scoring for Purchase with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Denis Redzematovic.
The Panthers advanced to 1-0 overall following Thursday's win. In defeat, the Bulldogs were tagged with their first loss of the season and drop to an even .500 (1-1).
Purchase will play a pair of road matches next week opening with Baruch on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
