PURCHASE, N.Y. – Time ran out on the Purchase men's lacrosse team as the Panthers were edged by Cairn University, 6-5, Saturday afternoon at home.
The loss sends Purchase to 2-4 on the year, while the Highlanders grab their first win of the season to improve to 1-4.
Sophomore attacker
Zach Collins (Victor, NY) led the Panthers with two goals, while fifth year
Cristian Ishoo (Tarrytown, NY), senior
Angus Goldman (Palisades, NY) and freshman
Shakim Carr (Brooklyn, NY) netted one apiece. Senior midfielder
Joe Ely registered a game-high six ground balls, while freshman attacker
Quran Langston (Stamford, NY) led all players with four caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper
Will Boes (Pleasantville, NY) (2-4) recorded nine saves, despite being tagged with the loss.
Junior attacker Jonathan Balsamo netted five of the Cairn's six goals, tying his career-high in goals (5) to lead the visitors. Ryan Gallagher chipped in with one goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Nico Cione (1-4) tallied a notable 19 saves to preserve the win.
Cairn got on the board first with an unassisted tally from Balsamo less than two minutes into play. He found the back of the net again off the pass from Cole Heffler.
Both teams went scoreless to open the second quarter before a Goldman goal lit up the board for the home team. Sophomore attacker Andrew Agosto (Poughkeepsie, NY) registered the assist.
Cairn fired back in the final minute of the stanza to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Purchase rattled off 23 shots over the final 30 minutes but only four resulted in goals—three of which were matched by Cairn's counter attack.
A pair of Purchase turnovers and a save by Cione in the final minutes proved to be costly as Cairn secured the win, 6-5.
PC looks to bounce back from Saturday's loss in its return to non-conference play this Wednesday. The Panthers will travel to New Haven, CT for a 7 p.m. game hosted by Albertus Magnus.
