Panthers Drop Pair at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team opened Skyline Conference action with a pair of losses Sunday afternoon, falling to Mount Saint Mary College on the road.

Scores for the contests were 4-2 and 10-7. With the results, the Panthers are now 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the league. For the Knights, they moved to 5-11 and 2-0, respectively.

Game One: MSMC 4, Purchase 2 (7 inn)

After a scoreless first inning, Purchase started the scoring in the second with an RBI-double from Joe Salerno (SO/White Plains, NY) to lead 1-0.

The hosts then responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to put the guests in a hole.

Mason Compton (SO/Carmel, NY) trimmed that margin in half in the third inning, as he slapped an RBI-single to third base. However, that was the last time the Panthers scored in the contest as the Knights' pitching locked in.

An insurance run in the fifth padded Mount Saint Mary's lead to 4-2, where the game ended two innings later.

At the plate, Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) and Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) each finished with a hit and run scored.

On the mound, Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) tossed a complete game in the losing effort. He went six innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and struckout five.

Game Two: MSMC 10, Purchase 7

Following the pitching dual to start the day, game two saw the offense take over as the two sides combined for 17 runs on 24 hits.

The Panthers once again opened the scoring, as Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY) hit an RBI-single in the top of the first.

But much like the first game, the Knights erupted in the bottom of the second to the tune of four runs to lead, 4-1.

Purchase then answered in the third, tying the contest off a two-RBI double from Sam Saltzman (SO/Old Bethpage, NY) and a sacrifice fly from Della Mura.

The tie was short lived though, as Mount St. Mary hit an RBI-single in the third to jump back in front, 5-4.

The score remained that way until the fifth inning, when a wild pitch allowed the Knights to push the lead to 6-4.

In the top of the sixth, Daly and Saltzman kept the Panthers in the contest with back-to-back RBI-singles, tying the contest once more.

However, the Knights' bats had an immediate answer, as the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to regain the advantage, 8-6.

After a scoreless seventh, Daly crushed an RBI-double in the eighth, trimming the deficit to 8-7.

But that was as close as Purchase got the rest of the day, as the hosts added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, before tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the win.

On the mound, the guests used four pitchers in the effort.

The starting pitcher was KJ Dow (FR/East Northport, NY), who went two innings and allowed four runs in the no decision. Reliever Justin Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) received the loss after allowing three runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings of work.

At bat, Daly recorded four hits, two doubles, two RBIs, three runs and a walk, while Saltzman finished with a pair of hits, three RBIs, one run and two walks.

Up next for the Panthers is the Skyline Conference home opener, as the squad welcomes Yeshiva University for a doubleheader on March 31 at 11 a.m. You can follow along right here.
