PURCHASE, N.Y. - A big offensive performance lifted the Purchase College baseball team Friday afternoon, as the Panthers cruised past Yeshiva University, 14-3, in the team's Skyline Conference home opener.
With the win, the Blue and Orange moved to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the league. For the Macs, they dropped to 0-18 and 0-9, respectively.
The Panthers finished with 14 runs on 17 hits on the day, despite a scoreless first inning. From there, the hosts proceeded to score at least one run in each of the next five innings to roll to the victory.
In the second, the hosts totaled five runs on six hits, as
Frank Rega's (FR/West Islip, NY)Â RBI-single got things started.
Two batters later,
Louis Carvell (SR/New York, NY) recorded his own RBI-single, before
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) hit a sacrifice bunt to score the Panthers' third run.
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) then slapped the third RBI-single of the inning, before
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) crushed an RBI-triple to center field to extend the lead to 5-0.
In the third frame, Purchase scored one run via an RBI-triple from
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY). One inning later, Daly hit an RBI-single to score Carvell, pushing the lead to 7-0.
The fifth inning then saw the offense explode once again, as it compiled five runs on six hits.
Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) opened the action with an RBI-double, before scoring himself on a wild pitch two batters later.
Carvell hit another RBI-single later in the inning to make it 10-0, before Betances recorded a sacrifice fly to score Scarry. From there, Daly capped off the scoring, this time with an RBI-single to push the margin to 12-0.
For Yeshiva, the guests struggled at the plate as they were no-hit during the first five innings.Â
However, the Macs managed to change that in the sixth by using a hit batter, an error and an RBI-single to score their first run of the day.
In the bottom of sixth inning, Purchase added two more runs as Rega hit a sacrifice fly and Carvell knocked in a run on a fielder's choice to closeout the scoring for the hosts.
The guests then added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 14-3, where the contest ended.Â
Individually, Daly led the way in the win, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs.
Castrogiovanni, Scarry and Carvell each recorded a trio of hits in the effort, while Reyes and Rega each tallied two hits apiece.
On the mound,
Brandon Reybok (FR/Lindenhurst, NY) secured his second win of the season after he went 5 1/3 innings. In the performance, he allowed just one unearned on one hit and struck out eight.
The two teams entered the day set to play two games, but game two was canceled after a Yeshiva player became ill and the squad only had eight guys remaining. At the time of publishing, it is unknown if/when the second game will be made up.
Up next for the Panthers is more Skyline Conference action, as the team travels to Long Island this weekend to face SUNY Old Westbury. That doubleheader matchup is set to begin at 11 a.m. on April 2 and you can follow it here.Â
