BRONX, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's tennis team was edged out by Skyline Conference powerhouse Yeshiva University, 5-4, Tuesday night at Cary Leeds Center.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. The host Maccabees improved to 2-9 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline.
Purchase jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play.
Julian Szuper (5th/New York, NY) and
Eli Palagatshev (FR/Yonkers, NY) teamed up for an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot, while
Ben Joory (SR/Port Washington, NY) and
Yuta Kawamura (FR/Greenwich, CT) recorded an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Palagatshev was first to finish in singles, netting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kobi Ciment at second singles.
Yeshiva got on the board with the win at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-2. Szuper fired back with the No. 1 singles win for Purchase, but YU rallied with a pair of victories at sixth and fourth singles, respectively.
With the match knotted at four, it came down to the No. 3 singles flight between Purchase rookie Kawamura and Yeshiva senior Eitan Jeselsohn. Jeselsohn won the first set, 6-3, while Kawamura came back to win the second, 6-4. Jeselsohn came through and won the third frame, 6-1, to clinch not only the third singles court but the deciding point to win the match.
The Panthers return to their home court this Thursday for a 4 p.m. non-conference match against the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University.
