Late Rally Sinks Purchase at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team was outscored 4-0 in the fourth period Tuesday afternoon, leading to a close loss at Mitchell College, 7-6.

With the result, the Panthers dropped to 2-3 overall to closeout non-conference action. For the Mariners, they improved to 2-4.

It was a tale of two halves for the guests, as Purchase raced out to an early lead on the day.

Brienne Westfall (SR/Grand Island, NY) and Julieth Velasquez (FR/White Plains, NY) opened the scoring for the Blue and Orange with back-to-back goals less than 15 seconds apart midway through the first period.

Analie Ingalsbe (SO/West Hurley, NY) then scored her first goal of the season to extend the Panthers' lead to 3-0 after 15 minutes.

Mitchell broke the scoring streak with a quick strike to begin the second period, before adding one final goal to closeout the opening half.

Between the Mitchell goals, Purchase added two more tallies, one from Velasquez and one from Giavanna Cordero (JR/Selden, NY), to lead 5-2 at the break.

The third period saw the two sides exchange a goal each, as Lauren Pudelka (SR/Danbury, CT) found the back of the net for the Panthers.

Entering the fourth quarter leading by the score of 6-3, the guests looked primed for the win.

The Mariners had other ideas though.

In the end, Mitchell scored four times in the period, all while holding the Purchase offense in check to secure the tight win, 7-6.

Individually, Ingalsbe led the Panthers with three points (1g, 2a), five draw controls and three grounds balls.

Velasquez added two goals, three draw controls and five ground balls, while Pudelka finished with the goal and two draw controls.

In goal, Casandra Schmoger (SR/Islip, NY), who played the first half, finished with five saves. Amani Jamal (SO/Hopewell Junction, NY) played the final 30 minutes, and tallied seven saves in the loss.

Up next for the Panthers is the start of Skyline Conference action, as the team travels to Long Island to battle SUNY Old Westbury. That matchup is set to begin at 5 p.m. on March 31.
