FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's lacrosse team nearly completed a fourth-quarter rally Friday night, falling just short to SUNY Old Westbury by the score of 7-6.
With the result, the Panthers moved to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline Conference. For Old Westbury, the hosts now sit at 2-1 and 1-0, respectively.
The guests opened the contest with back-to-back goals in the first quarter, as
Julieth Velasquez (FR/White Plains, NY) scored first, and
Alyssa Kozak (JR/East Meadow, NY) followed minutes later, both off feeds from
Analie Ingalsbe (SO/West Hurley, NY).
Old Westbury answered with three-straight goals over the end of the first period and early into the second to grab the lead.
The score remained 3-2 until Velasquez tied things up on a solo effort with 2:34 remaining in the quarter. From there, the 3-3 tie remained into halftime.
Following the break, Old Westbury's offense exploded to the tune of four goals over the third period, as Purchase was held off the board.
Entering the final 15 minutes, the Blue and Orange needed to rally to get back in the contest. And early in the quarter, they did just that.
Brienne Westfall (SR/Grand Island, NY) got the effort started with a solo goal, making it 7-4 with 13:25 remaining. Less than a minute later, Ingalsbe found the back of the net, trimming the margin even further.
Kozak continued the run 90 seconds after that, as her goal cut the lead to just one, 7-6. At that point, it seemed inevitable that Purchase would at least tie the game up, if not win it.
However, the defense of the hosts locked in over the final 10 minutes of the contest, limiting the Panthers to just three shots the rest of the way, all of which were saved.
As a result, Purchase ran of out time to complete the comeback attempt, as the Old Westbury secured the conference win.
Individually, Ingalsbe finished with a team-high three points (1g, 2a), two ground balls and two caused turnovers.Â
Kozak collected the two goals, five draw controls and two ground balls, while Velasquez tallied two goals and three draw controls.
On defense,
Delece Kerr (SO/Jamaica, NY) grabbed a team-high three ground balls, while
Casandra Schmoger (SR/Islip, NY) finished with 14 saves.Â
Up next for the Panthers is a full week of rest before returning to action at home against St. Joseph's University-Long Island. That matchup is scheduled for April 7 at 3 p.m. and you can follow along right here.Â
