PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday afternoon, falling to St. Joseph's University-Long Island in a Skyline Conference doubleheader.
Final scores on the day were 6-2 and 11-2. With the result, the Panthers fell to 9-14 overall and 3-4 in the league. For the Golden Eagles, they moved to 19-3 and 9-1, respectively.
Game One: St. Joseph's-Long Island 6, Purchase 2 (7 inn)
The guests started the contest fast, knocking in four runs in the first inning. Purchase got on the board in the second frame, when
Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) stole home during a pick-off throw to first base.
Two innings later, Reyes hit the first home run of his career to trim the lead to 4-2.
However, that was as close as Purchase got the rest of the way, as the Golden Eagles closed out the win with runs in the sixth and seventh.
Reyes was the only Panther to record a multi-hit performance in the effort.
On the mound,
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) earned the start and loss. He went six innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits and striking out two.
Game Two: St. Joseph's-Long Island 11, Purchase 2 (10 inn)
Despite the final score, the second game of the afternoon was a toss-up throughout.
The two sides started with a pair of scoreless innings, before St. Joseph's broke through in the third inning with a sacrifice fly.
Purchase then got on the board, scoring both of its runs in the fourth.
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) tallied the first run on an RBI-triple, before later crossing the plate via a wild pitch for the second run.
The Panthers held the 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, until another sacrifice fly from the guests tied things up.Â
From there, the two sides tossed three innings of scoreless baseball, leading to extra innings to decide a winner. However, it didn't take long for that winner to emerge, as the guests exploded for nine runs in the top of the 10th to effectively seal the win.
Individually,
Louis Carvell (SR/New York, NY) recorded half of the team's hits on the day, tallying three singles.
Daly collected a pair of hits, while
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) added one hit.
On the mound, Purchase's starting pitching
Ryan Castrataro (SR/Mahopac, NY) was masterful in the no-decision effort. He went eight innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out five.Â
Jonathan Uzzo (FR/Bethpage, NY) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in the 10th.
The game marked the first time the Panthers played a contest into the 10th inning or later since the 2021 season.
Up next for the Blue and Orange is a return to non-conference action, as the team plays the City College of New York tomorrow (4/16) in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon and it will be played at Purchase.
