PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a pair of wins Sunday afternoon, topping the City College of New York in back-to-back contests.
Scores for the games were 12-9 and 8-5.
With the wins, the Panthers moved to 11-14 overall. For the Beavers, they dropped to 8-14.
Game One: Purchase 12, CCNY 9 (7 inn)
The Blue and Orange began the day quickly, putting up two runs in the first inning.
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) knocked in the first one with an RBI-single, before
Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) stole home during the next at-bat.
CCNYÂ then answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs of its own, tying the contest back up.
However, the Panthers'Â offense was clicking all game long, as it responded with three runs in the second.
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) started the scoring with a two-run double, and ended up providing the third run as he crossed the plate via a throwing error.
Two innings later, Daly hit another double, this time scoring one run to push the Panthers' lead to 6-2.
After Daly stole third,
Joe Salerno (SO/White Plains, NY) knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to cap off the inning for Purchase.
Despite the 7-2 hole, the Beavers continued to fight, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
With their lead trimmed to two runs, the hosts got some help in the fifth inning as an error allowed
Louis Carvell (SR/New York, NY) to score and extend the margin.
One frame later, Reyes hit his second home run in as many days, this time scoring an inside the park version to push the margin to 10-5.
However, three runs in the sixth kept CCNY in the game, before the Panthers finally put the kibosh on the game with back-to-back runs in the seventh inning.
The first came from
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) as he hit an RBI-triple to right field.
Trevor Zanderzuk (JR/Manorville, NY) then hit an RBI-single up the middle to push the Panthers' advantage to 12-8.
The Beavers did manage another run in the bottom of the seventh, but weren't able to get any closer as Purchase held on for the win.
Overall, the Blue and Orange finished with 12 runs on 13 hits, as they scored in every inning but the third.
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) led the Panthers with three hits (two doubles) and three runs, while Daly finished with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs.
On the mound, the hosts used five pitchers. Starter
Cass Muller (JR/Brooklyn, NY) only went 3 2/3 innings, but earned the win for PC. He allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out one.
Justin Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) and Betances combined for 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief in the effort.
Game Two: Purchase 8, CCNY 5 (7 inn)
After the offensive explosion in the opening game, the Purchase bats remained hot in game two.
In the first inning, the Panthers knocked in three runs thanks to an RBI-triple from Reyes, an RBI-double from Zanderzuk and an RBI-single from Carvell.
CCNY remained pesky in game two though, scoring three runs of its own in the second inning to tie things up.
The 3-3 score remained until the fifth inning, as the guests tallied two more runs in the frame to grab their first lead of the afternoon.
However, the advantage was short lived as the hosts answered in the sixth with a pair of runs. The first came via a Carvell RBI-groundout, before Castrogiovanni tied the contest at 5-5 with an RBI-single.
The winning run came one inning later in the top of the seventh, as Rega played the role of hero.Â
After two quick outs started the frame, the Panthers loaded the bases for Rega via a single and two straight walks. The freshman catcher made the most of the opportunity, as he doubled in all three runs to push the lead to its eventual final line, 8-5
On the mound,
KJ Dow (FR/East Northport, NY) got the start. He went 4Â 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on three hits. He also fanned three in the no decision.
Philip Dragovich (FR/ New York, NY) received the win after he gave up just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
At the plate, Daly, Rega and Reyes each finished with a pair of hits, while Zanderzuk compiled a double, an RBI, three runs and three walks in the victory.
Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team hosts the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 22 for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 11 a.m.
