PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – For the second time this week, the Purchase men's lacrosse team used a late scoring run to extend its Skyline Conference win tally. Back-to-back goals from
Joe Ely (SR/North Salem, NY) and
Zach Collins (SO/Victor, NY) in the final minutes of regulation capped off a furious fourth-quarter rally and gave the Panthers an epic 8-7 victory over the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
Purchase pushes its win streak to two games, improving to 6-6 overall and above .500 at 2-1 in the Skyline. SJU falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Trailing 6-3 with 8:33 left in the third quarter, the Panthers flipped the storyline and closed the game with a 5-1 scoring edge over the Golden Eagles.
Ely ignited the run with a solo strike at 4:27. The third quarter goal—Ely's second in the game—was followed by a fourth quarter
Andrew Agosto (SO/Poughkeepsie, NY) tally off the feed from
Quran Langston (FR/Stamford, NY).
Less than a minute later though, the hosts registered one of their own to lead 7-5. SJU's Nik Allen connected with Kyle Strayer for the goal at 12:10.
With 8:19 to go, freshman attacker
Shakim Carr's (Brooklyn, NY) unassisted tally trimmed the deficit to 7-6.
That's when things got interesting.
Both teams traded shots over the next several minutes but neither side was successful.
Or at least that was the case until Ely's hat trick sealer at 1:42 tied the game. Carr collected the ground ball on the next faceoff and found Collins, who recorded the game-winner at 1:37—a mere five seconds after Ely's tally.
The Panthers held on through the final whistle for the 8-7 win.
Sophomore netminder
Will Boes (Pleasantville, NY) improved to 6-6 overall with seven saves spread across 60 minutes of action.
SJU's Connor Van Dusen was tagged with the loss despite a nine-save performance.
Purchase will continue its road slate on Wednesday, traveling to Skyline powerhouse Maritime College for a 7 p.m. start.
