PURCHASE, N.Y. - For the second time in as many days, the Purchase College baseball team earned a doubleheader split against a Skyline Conference foe, as Sunday's battle took place against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn.
The first game went to St. Joseph's by the score of 6-0, before the Panthers answered in a big way in game two, 14-8.
With the results, the Blue and Orange moved to 14-16 overall and 6-6 in conference games. For the Bears, they now sit at 10-16 and 5-7, respectively.
Game One: St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 6, Purchase 0 (7 inn)
The opening game of the afternoon saw Purchase go scoreless for the first time all season, as luck didn't favor the hosts.
During the seven innings, the Panthers put runners in scoring position five times, including loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth with no outs.
However, a double play and a flyout on back-to-back at bats sealed the shutout effort, and the hosts were left empty-handed.
For the guests, they tallied one run in the first and sixth innings, and two apiece in the third and fourth to cruise to the win.
Overall, Purchase recorded five hits with
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) tallying two of them.
On the hill, starterÂ
Brandon Reybok (FR/Lindenhurst, NY) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits over three innings.
Game Two: Purchase 14, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 8
After being shutout for the first time all year, the Panthers responded with a vengeance in game two to the tune of 14 runs on 15 hits.
In the opening inning,
Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY) drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Blue and Orange on the board.
Two innings later,
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) slapped an RBI-single, before Della Mura crushed a two-run homer to left field to make it 4-0.
Later in the inning,
Cameron Cruz (SO/Bronx, NY) hit an RBI-single to extend the lead, before
Trevor Zanderzuk (JR/Manorville, NY) capped the frame with a three-run blast to push the margin to 8-0.
After the guests scored their first run of the game in the top of fourth, the Panthers matched the run off an RBI-double from
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) in the bottom of the frame.
One inning later, the two sides traded runs once more to make it 10-2, before an error allowed the guests to score a third run.
Zanderzuk then hit an RBI-single in the seventh extending Purchase's margin to 11-3, as it looked like the Panthers would cruise to victory.Â
However, the guests responded with five runs in the eighth inning, trimming the once blowout to just a three-run game, 11-8.
But in the end, the Panthers stood tall and added three more runs in the eighth, thanks to a hit by pitch, a bases-loaded walk and a balk, which allowed them to seal the win.
Individually, Zanderzuk, Castrogiovanni and Cruz each finished with three hits apiece in the effort.Â
On the mound, starter
KJ Dow (FR/East Northport, NY) was effective in the no decision. He allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three in 3 1/3 innings.
In relief,
Cass Muller (JR/Brooklyn, NY) collected the win as he went 4 1/3 innings. He finished with three K's and allowed three earned runs on six hits.
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) earned the save after recording the final four outs.
Up next for the Panthers is the final non-conference game of the season, as they welcome SUNY New Paltz on April 26 at 5 p.m.
