MSMC Rides Second-Half Surge to Top Purchase in Skyline Opener

The Knights outscore the Panthers 9-2 over the final 30 minutes to earn first league win

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Purchase College opened Skyline Conference action on the road Wednesday, falling 15-5 to Mount Saint Mary College at Kaplan Field.

The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Panthers (4-6, 0-1 SKY), while the Knights' (3-4, 1-0 SKY) four-game losing streak came to an end with the win.

Mount's Mike Travers broke the scoring ice less than two minutes into the game. The senior midfielder would later close the contest leading all scorers with a season-high four goals and three assists.

After Ryan Olmstead netted back-to-back goals to push the hosts ahead 3-0, Purchase's Angus Goldman (SR/Palisades, NY) broke through with a goal off the pass of Andrew Agosto (SO/Poughkeepsie, NY).

A Travers goal capped the first quarter scoring followed by a seesaw battle between the two teams in the opening minutes of the second stanza.

With 7:17 on the clock, senior midfielder Joe Ely (North Salem, NY) chipped away at the Mount's 5-2 lead with an unassisted goal (5-3).  The hosts again had an answer for that, notching one three minutes later from the unassisted effort by Xavier Rodriguez.

Mount Saint Mary held a 6-3 advantage at the break and erupted with a slew of goals over the final 30 minutes. The Knight attack produced four goals in the third quarter and five in the fourth, while Purchase found itself in a scoring slump.

En route to the 15-5 win, Mount's Matthew Esposito and Larry Frank capped the hosts' scoring run with the final two goals of the game, respectively.

Kenny Leen earned the win in goal for the Knights after turning down 14 shots.

Ely led the Panther squad with two goals and three ground balls. Goldman, Cristian Ishoo (SR/Tarrytown, NY) and Ayotunde Otuyelu had one goal apiece.

Purchase goalie Will Boes (Pleasantville, NY), who was named this week's Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Week, was tagged with Tuesday's loss. He finished the game with five saves and thee ground balls.

The Panthers are off the rest of the week and will resume action next Tuesday (Apr. 11) at 6 p.m. Purchase will play host to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins for a Skyline contest and the D3 Week Showdown event.
