PURCHASE, N.Y. – Eight different starters ended the day with multi-hit efforts as Purchase baseball bested Saint Elizabeth University, 19-11, in nine innings on Wednesday.
The win pushed PC's win streak to four games and moved the record needle to an even .500 at 9-9 overall. In defeat, Saint Elizabeth dropped to 7-13 overall.
Purchase recorded runs in every inning, highlighted by a six-run second frame that gave the Panthers a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game.
After a pair of Eagle runs in the top of the first, freshman shortstop
Tyler Della Mura (Rye Brook, NY) got Purchase on the board in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to right field. Sophomore designated hitter
Joe Salerno (White Plains, NY) came in from third to break the scoring ice.
Following a
Mason Compton (SO/Carmel, NY) single and back-to-back eagle errors in the same play, Purchase went on to tally another two runs to close the frame out in front, 3-2.
Saint Elizabeth would pull ahead, 5-3, with a 4-hit, 3-run second inning, but the Panthers fired back with their highest single-inning scoring run of the season.
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) led off with bunt, stole second and later came around to score (5-4) on a
Louis Carvell (SR/New York, NY) double to left field.
Trevor Zanderzuk (JR/Manorville, NY) followed with a sacrifice bunt that pushed Carvell to third. Next at the plate was Salerno, who singled up the middle for the game-tying RBI (5-5). Standout rookie
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) recorded his fourth triple of the season with a bomb to left center, sending Salerno around the bases to score (6-5) the eventual game-winning run. Daly scored (7-5) on the next at-bat—a Della single to second base.
Compton and
Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) both singled to load the bases and force an Eagle pitching change. Despite the fresh arm on the hill, Purchase didn't back down and went on to bat around its lineup, scoring another two runs (9-5) on a Scarry single through the right side. Scarry was later tagged with the third out after a failed stolen base attempt.
Sophomore reliever
Justin Doskoez (Eastport, NY) was on the mound for Purchase to start the third inning and went on to record a trio of scoreless frames. He allowed just two hits with one walk and one strikeout, earning his first win of the season (1-1).
While the Eagle bats went cold, the Panthers' stayed hot, combining for another 10 runs spread across six innings.
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) recorded the final Panther run of the day after heading home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Scarry ended the day going 4-for-6 with one run scored and two RBI. Della Mura went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI, while Daly (3-for-5) and Salerno (2-for-5) tied for the game-high in RBI with three apiece.
Purchase will return to action with a road game against non-conference RPI on Saturday at noon.
