Baseball Bested at RPI

TROY, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team lost a pair of contests Saturday afternoon, falling to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on the road.

Scores for the non-conference matchups were 12-4 and 6-2. With the losses, the Panthers fell to 9-11 overall. For the Engineers, they improved to 15-9-1.

Game One: RPI 12, Purchase 4

After the hosts opened the game with a pair of runs in the first, Cameron Cruz (SO/Bronx, NY) answered for the Panthers with a solo homer in the third to slash the margin in half.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth, when the guests knotted three runs to briefly take the lead.

Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) started the run with an RBI-single, before Louis Carvell's (SR/New York, NY) RBI-groundout gave Purchase the lead.

During the next at-bat, Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) smacked an RBI-double to extend the Blue and Orange advantage to 4-2.

However, the hosts responded with a vengeance in the seventh inning, initially scoring a run via a Panthers' error, before crushing a grand slam later in the frame to blow the game open.

RPI then added five more runs in the eighth, pushing the margin to 12-4, where the contest finished one inning later.

Freshman Liam Daly (Babylon, NY) recorded two hits in the effort, while Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) was tagged with the loss despite a solid outing on the mound.

He went 6 1/3 innings, struck out six and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits.

Game Two: RPI 6, Purchase 2 (7 inn)

Following the comeback win, the Engineers picked up right where they left off in game two, scoring five runs in second inning to take a commanding lead early.

Joe Salerno (SO/White Plains, NY) then responded for the Panthers by hitting an RBI-double in the third, before the hosts manufactured a run in the fourth to extend the lead back to five runs, 6-1.

The final score of the contest came from the bat of Salerno, as his RBI-single in the fifth scored Daly and trimmed the margin to 6-2, where it eventually ended.

At the plate, Salerno finished with a team-high three hits, two RBIs and one walk. Daly and Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY) each recorded a pair of hits in the loss.

On the mound, starter KJ Dow (FR/East Northport, NY) received the decision after he went 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits.

Up next for the Panthers is a non-conference road matchup at Western Connecticut State University. That single game is scheduled for April 12 at 4 p.m.
