PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team edged ever closer to the Skyline Conference Playoffs Saturday afternoon, after splitting a doubleheader with the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
The Dolphins took the opening contest by the score of 9-8, before the Panthers rebounded in game two, winning 13-2.
With the split, the Panthers are now 19-18 overall, 10-8 in Skyline Conference games and currently sit in sixth place in the division.
The Blue and Orange enter the final day of the regular season needing just one win at Farmingdale State College to clinch their first playoff birth since 2014.
For the Dolphins, they have already locked up a playoff birth, as they enter the final day with records of 22-14 and 12-6, respectively.
Game One: Mount Saint Vincent 9, Purchase 8 (7 inn)
The hosts began the afternoon with a torrid pace after dropping four runs in the first frame.
Purchase then got one run back in the top of the second off a
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) RBI-double, before being held scoreless over the next two frames.
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) broke the streak with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, trimming the margin to 4-2, before the bottom of the fifth saw the Dolphins plate four more runs to take control of the game.
Or so they thought.
Now trailing by the score of 8-2, the Panthers responded with a vengeance in the top of the sixth, knocking in six runs to tie the game up.
Tyler Della Mura (FR/Rye Brook, NY) got the scoring run started with an RBI-double. A few batters later,
Trevor Zanderzuk (JR/Manorville, NY) crushed a two-run double to make the margin to 8-5.
Another sacrifice fly from Daly trimmed the Purchase deficit even smaller, before a two-run single from
Patrick Reyes (FR/Plainedge, NY) tied the contest up at 8-8.
However, Mount Saint Vincent also instantaneously answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead as the game entered its final inning.
Purchase then suffered a 1-2-3 inning, as the Dolphins escaped with the opening-game win.
Zanderzuk led the Blue and Orange with three hits, while Reyes, Della Mura and Castrogiovanni each added two hits.
On the mound,
Ryan Castrataro (SR/Mahopac, NY) got the start. He went four innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits in the no decision.
Cass Muller (JR/Brooklyn, NY) was tagged with the loss in relief.
Game Two: Purchase 13, Mount Saint Vincent 2
While the Panthers' comeback fell just short in game one, game two was a completely different story as they raced out to an early lead and never looked back.
The guests opened the contest with two runs in the first, courtesy of a Reyes RBI-groundout and a Castrogiovanni RBI-double.
After a Dolphins' solo homer halved the margin in the third inning, Purchase got the run back in the fifth off an RBI-double from Zanderzuk to go in front, 3-1.
From there, the Blue and Orange plated four runs in the sixth, as
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY), Zanderzuk and
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) recorded RBI-hits.
One inning later, Reyes and
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) each hit solo homers to push the margin to 9-1, before a solo shot from the Dolphins made it 9-2.
However, the Panthers never relented in the win, adding two runs in both, the eighth and ninth innings, to push the final score to 13-2.
Zanderzuk again led all batters, this time finishing with four hits, three RBIs and three runs.
Scarry and Reyes each batted out three hits apiece, while Castrogiovanni, Betances and
Cameron Cruz (SO/Bronx, NY) each tallied two hits. As a team, the Panthers finished with 18 hits in the easy win.
Despite all the hitting success, the real star of the game was starting pitcher
Brandon Reybok, who tossed a nine-inning complete-game gem. He finished with seven K's and allowed just two runs on five hits.
Up next for the Panthers is the aforementioned doubleheader matchup with Farmingdale State on May 7. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
