Panthers Top Golden Eagles in Skyline Opener

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team prevailed in the Skyline Conference opener Tuesday night, besting St. Joseph's College-Long Island by the score of 2-1.

With the win, the Panthers extended their winning streak to four games and now sit at 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. For the Golden Eagles, they dropped to 3-4 and 0-2, respectively.

Reigning Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ermin Mackic (FR/Yonkers, NY) opened the scoring as he found the back of the net in the seventh minute off a feed from Leo Conte (SR/New York, NY).

The game remained in Purchase's favor until the 43rd minute, when the hosts snuck one past keeper Jack Gjokaj (JR/Thornwood, NY) to make it 1-1 at halftime.

Following the break, the two sides played a scoreless opening 10 minutes until freshman Oliver Broun (Athens, GA) delivered the winning shot in the 56th minute with fellow freshman Jair Cano (White Plains, NY) assisting on the play

While the offensive provided the necessary strike, it was the heroics of Gjokaj that kept the game in Purchase's favor as the goalie saved a penalty less than a minute after the Broun goal.

From there, the Golden Eagles worked hard to try and equalize, putting up eight shots over the remaining 30-plus minutes of play. The closest chance came in the 90th minute when the hosts rang one off the crossbar, but Purchase held off the attack and emerged victorious.

On the night, the Panthers finished with six shots on goal and 11 overall. In goal, Gjokaj tallied three saves in the winning effort.

Up next for the men's soccer team is more Skyline Conference road action, as the team travels down the street to face Manhanttanville College on September 23 at 1 p.m.
