DANBURY, CT. – Purchase College edged out the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team, 5-4, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers advanced to an even .500 at 2-2 overall, while the Wolves dropped to 3-2 on the season.
Purchase opened the day with wins at second and third doubles. The No. 2 pairing of
Olivia Menchell (JR/Los Angeles, CA) and
Novalie Nguyen (SO/Macedon, NY) bested Brooke Stillman and Diana Rebelo, 8-5, while
Sierra Blanco (SO/New York, NY) and
Harley Colletti (JR/Bardonia, NY) battled to an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Wolves clawed back early in singles play, jumping out in front (3-2) following Cierra Kitt's and Diana Rebelo's wins at the first and third flights, respectively.
The comeback attempt was snapped, however, as Purchase fired back in the fifth and sixth singles matches en route to securing the non-conference victory. At No. 6, Nguyen battled Aylina Razeq to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory.
Elaina Coppola (SR/White Plains, NY) notched the deciding point with a notable 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 showing at No. 5.
Riding a two-match win streak, the Panthers look to stay hot as they return to the courts tomorrow for their third match in as many days. PC will play host to non-conference John Jay College beginning at 3 p.m.
