PURCHASE, N.Y. – Playing in their third match in three days, the Purchase College women's tennis team battled John Jay College to a 5-4 upset at home on Thursday afternoon.
The visiting Bloodhounds led 2-1 after doubles but Purchase (2-3) clawed back in singles play to take a 4-2 lead.
Adding to
Sierra Blanco (SO/New York, NY) and
Harley Colletti's 8-2 victory at third doubles, Purchase opened singles with wins at the bottom three positions. Blanco struck first with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 5, before
Novalie Nguyen (SO/Macedon, NY) recorded the point in the sixth spot, 6-1, 6-2. At fourth singles,
Elaina Coppola (SR/White Plains, NY) commanded a 6-1, 6-2 score to push Purchase to a 4-2 advantage.
Despite valiant efforts from the Panther trio, Purchase was unable to secure another point the rest of the way. John Jay (3-1) rallied with wins across the final three matchups en route to a dramatic come-from-behind 5-4 victory.
