Panthers Rally for Win at Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's volleyball team bested SUNY Old Westbury in four sets Tuesday night, notching their first win over the Skyline Conference foe since 2013.

Set scores for the contest were 23-25, 25-7, 25-18 and 25-23.

With the win, the Panthers jumped to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline Conference. For Old Westbury, it dropped to 1-10 and 0-3, respectively.

The victory came just two weeks shy of the 10-year anniversary of the only other win in program history against Old West, as Purchase topped the Green and White in straight sets on October 12, 2013.

Fueling the victory was a trio of hitters, as Lauren White (JR/Washington, DC), Ava Landreth (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and Lilith Bastek-Ochoa (JR/Sag Harbor, NY) each finished with eight kills apiece.

Marcella Pena (FR/Bronx, NY) and Jessica Scott (JR/Elmsford, NY) both tallied six kills each in the win

Meanwhile, Maya Brown (FR/Carteret, NJ) set career high with 28 digs, while Natalia Leite (FR/Thornwood, NY) also set career high with 34 assists.

As for the game, after dropping a close opening set, the guests responded with one of their best sets of the season. They hit .333 with nine kills, as they breezed past the hosting Panthers to tie things at 1-1.

From there, Purchase continued to play well in the third set, creating some separation and emerging with the vital set win.

Despite that advantage, Purchase faced stiff competition in the final set. In fact, Old Westbury nearly forced a deciding fifth frame, going up by as many as six points late, 22-16.

However, the Blue and Orange weren't going to be denied in their quest on the night. They answered with eight straight points and nine of the final ten to seal the set and game.

Overall, Purchase hit .110 overall with 40 kills in the win. For Old Westbury, it managed just .028 hitting and 36 kills.

Up next for the Panthers is a return to their home court as the squad hosts Mount Saint Vincent on September 28th at 7 p.m.
