PURCHASE, N.Y. - A late strike lifted the Purchase College men's soccer team to victory Wednesday night, as the Panthers outlasted Sarah Lawrence College in a wild contest, 4-3.
The strike came in the 82nd minute, courtesy of
Jair Cano (FR/White Plains, NY), who found the back of the net off feeds from
Liam George (JR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Ermin Mackic (FR/Yonkers, NY).
The goal saved the Blue and Orange after the hosts initially rolled out to a 3-1 lead, only to see the guests tie things up late in the second half.
To begin the night, Sarah Lawrence scored in the fifth minute off a beautiful free kick to edge in front.
Six minutes later, Mackic continued his scoring ways by putting in a rebounded shot off a Gryphon save that the keeper failed to hold onto.
The score remained level until the 30th minute, when George knocked in a header from a Mackic feed.
Less than four minutes later, Mackic added his second of the game after great buildup from
Leo Conte (SR/New York, NY) and
Luca Li Vigni (SO/Staten Island, NY).
At halftime, the Panthers lead 3-1 and looked well on their way to an easy win. But the guests had other ideas.
Just four minutes into the second half, the Gryphons halved the deficit and seemed rejuvenated from then on.
Sarah Lawrence continued to push, but it was actually Purchase that had the next great chance on offense as Li Vigni nearly scored on an empty goal in the 65th minute, only to be denied by a sliding defender clearing the ball.
Following the team save, the momentum swung back to guests. That energy final exploded in the 76th minute when they won a penalty and then scored a subsequent goal, tying up the game at 3-3.
Just two minutes later, Sarah Lawrence earned another penalty and could taste the lead.
However, Panthers' keeper
Jack Gjokaj (JR/Thornwood, NY) stood tall in goal, guessed correctly and punched away the chance to keep the game level.
With the renewed life, the Blue and Orange fought back and were rewarded with the Cano goal just four minutes later to win the match.
With the victory, the Panthers moved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline Conference. For the Gryphons, they dropped to 3-4 and 2-1, respectively.
Up next for Purchase is a home matchup with Maritime College on September 30th at noon. Follow along right here.Â
